The TOTE Bag - a handy accessory!

Is it just me, or do we girls need a different handbag for every occasion? Clutch bags, over-the-shoulder bags, shopper bags, designer bags…the list goes on. No wonder men just cannot seem to compete in the style stakes, what do they get? Briefcases and backpacks. Not exactly high in the fashion stakes.

Taking the time to choose a handbag is a girl’s prerogative. We need to think about it. Do I really like the colour or is it just because it’s the latest recommendation in Cosmo? Will my £45 tin foil clutch bag still be in fashion in 3 months time? Is the suitcase-sized handbag on display going to fit all my worldly possessions in? You know, those sorts of things.

Types of handbags fashionable today (Part I)

Now that we have looked at how handbags came to be where they are today (Part I & II), let us see what is on offer today.

  1. Clutch Bag: Small but long bag (rectangular), evening bag without a handle. You have to clutch it – hence the name.

  2. Satchel: Either a large bag with small handle that is carried on the arm rather than on the shoulder or bag with one, sometimes two, large straps that goes over one shoulder and across the body. Popular with students as it is suitable for carrying books.
